This department is the focal point of much of the MAG's operational activities. Its work ranges from verifying the legality of striking particular targets to considering the humanitarian aspects of conflict. Such assitance was vital during, and in the aftermath of Israel's two most recent wars. Comprehensive legal advice was provided to commanders on the ground in real time, assuring that the IDF's activities were comensurate with the provisions of international law.
Operational- The prevalent use of criminal practices employed by the enemy in waging aggression against Israel presents a unique set of challenges with which the IDF must contend. Such unlawful acts include the use of civilians as human shields thereby presenting the dilemna of how to distinguish between civilians and unlawful combatants.
Strategic- This unit addresses the legal consequences of Israel's military relations with foreign armies, examining potential treaties and agreements. Furthermore, it is responsible for handling the legal specifics of joint training exercises.
Humanitarian- The impact of military actions upon the civilian population is of critical concern for the IDF. As a democratic society subscribing to the principles of human rights and respect of dignity, Israel seeks to mitigate the adverse effects of such activities upon non-combatants. As an example, the unit continuously reviews and advises the IDF regarding the impact of the economic embargo upon the inhabitants of Gaza.
